“This marvelous event is more than just a fundraiser. It brings breast cancer awareness to the tri-state area and rewards the evening’s participants with the great feeling that they’ve admirably aided a worthy cause,“ said Vicky Cooke, Executive Director of DBCC. This year’s proceeds will further quality programs such as providing educational programs to community groups and participating in health and wellness fairs; educating nursing students how to teach others to conduct breast self-exams; identifying medically underserved women who qualify for free screenings and treatment; educating healthcare students and providers about health concerns and barriers facing lesbian and bisexual women; coordinating the MAAM Coalition, a group committed to increasing screening rates of senior African American women; supporting young women who have been diagnosed with breast cancer and addressing their unique needs through the Young Survivors In Action program, while also educating and empowering young women in their 20’s and 30’s about breast health, screenings, and acting on their family histories.
DBCC was established in 1991 to raise awareness of breast cancer by providing information, support, and education in a caring and responsive manner on early detection and treatment. DBCC was formed by a small group of community volunteers who were committed to decreasing the mortality rate of breast cancer in Delaware among women and men. The agency has sponsored many educational programs that address the needs and concerns of women of all ages. Breast cancer survivors under the age of forty are targeted through the Young Survivors In Action program. DBCC is a chapter of the National Breast Cancer Coalition and supports the national organization’s efforts to research the causes of breast cancer and pursue optimal treatments and cures. DBCC is located at 100 W. 10th Street, Suite 1115, Wilmington, DE 19801. For additional information about the organization, please call (302) 778-1102 or visit our website at www.debreastcancer.org.
