Wilmington, DE, January 3, 2003 – Taking Care of Ourselves, a program of the Delaware Breast Cancer Coalition, Inc. (DBCC) for lesbians and women who partner with women introduces a new, innovative approach to teach women about the importance of early detection of breast cancer: Breast Health House Parties!
With games such as: Truths & Myths, Breast Health Bingo, Breast Health Jeopardy, Acting Up!, and Bouncing Around Ideas, women learn important information about breast health, early detection methods, and ways to overcome barriers to accessing health care, such as fears about to coming out to a health care professional.
A trained facilitator will come to a woman’s home, youth group, or other women’s group in Delaware to teach friends and family about the three essential components of early detection: breast self-exam, clinical breast exam, and mammography.
The facilitator teaches women this important, potentially life saving information in a relaxed social setting among friends and family who can support each other with their health questions and concerns.
The house parties include games, activities, discussion, a video, and breast self-exam instruction using practice breast models. For more information, or to host a party, please call Sandra Hoy at (302) 778-1102, or e-mail at shoy@debreastcancer.org.
This project is supported by a grant from the Philadelphia Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The Mautner Project for Lesbians with Cancer assisted in the development of the house party activities. DBCC was established in 1991 by a small group of community volunteers to raise awareness of breast cancer by providing information, education and support in a caring and responsive manner on the early detection and treatment of breast cancer. DBCC is an affiliate member of the National Breast Cancer Coalition and supports the national organization’s efforts to research the causes of breast cancer and pursue optimal treatments and cures. DBCC is located at 100 W. 10th Street, Suite 1115 in Wilmington, DE 19801, with a Resource Center located in Dover, DE.
