14th Annual Breast Cancer Update

Each Spring, DBCC presents a symposium featuring leading medical experts and other speakers discussing the most current topics in breast cancer diagnosis, treatment, detection and survivorship.  The annual one-day educational forum is free and open to the public, and has become one of Delaware’s most trusted sources of up-to date breast cancer information.

The 14th Annual Breast Cancer Update will be held on Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at the Sheraton Hotel Conference Center in Dover.

DBCC is excited to present a excellent roster of speakers to address breast cancer prevention and risk reduction. Exciting news comes out weekly about new ways to treat breast cancer but what do we know about how to prevent it in the first place or to keep it from coming back? Our speakers will present the best available evidence on nutrition, physical activity, genetic factors, Vitamin D, hormonal treatments, and surgical approaches. We will also have an informative presentation on the National Breast Cancer Coalition's call to action: Breast Cancer Deadline 2020.

New this year is a Special Afternoon Session: “Cancer Clinical Trials: An In-Depth Look” from 1:45 - 4:30pm Presenters: Kandie Dempsey, MS, RN, OCN, CCRP Director of Cancer Research Helen F. Graham Cancer Center   Nanci Mayer-Mihalski, BS President, Mayer-MihalskiConsulting,Inc.

Clinical trials contribute to knowledge and progress against cancer. Many of today’s most effective cancer treatments are based on previous study results. Research studies encompass a wide range of cancer-related disciplines and because of progress made through clinical trials, many people treated for cancer are now living longer. This session will cover:

  • The importance of clinical trials
  • How clinical trials work
  • How clinical trials advance cancer care
  • Types and phases of clinical trials
  • The drug development and approval process
  • Barriers to participation
  • How patients’ rights are protected

This session is accreditated for 3.0 Contact Hours. You must register for this session in advance. You do not need to attend the Update to participate in the afternoon session.
